About R.E.A.L School

  • Richmond Educational Academy for Learning (R.E.A.L) is a division-based transitional program designed to provide a non-traditional school setting for students who require structured therapeutic school-based supports due to behavioral challenges that interfere with academic progress.  The R.E.A.L. purpose is to create a multidisciplinarian therapeutic environment and a culture of high expectations that enhance socio-emotional growth and academic progress.  Our program offers a systematic approach to addressing the academic, emotional, and social needs of students through providing opportunities for growth across the classroom, school, and community settings.

Our staff consist of qualified teachers, instructional assistants, a behavioral specialist, and a school counselor who are all trained in delivering specialized support with a therapeutic approach to students who have significant social/emotional needs.

Our program is designed to meet the specific needs of students as outlined in their Individualized Education Programs (IEP), which guide instructional practices and services.  The program team utilizes the Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) to develop, assess, and monitor appropriate behavioral goals, and data are collected to determine progress toward meeting those goals.  Currently, students are referred to the REAL School program through an IEP team at a student's comprehensive middle school.  Students enrolled in the REAL program are placed throughout the school year, with progress evaluated at least quarterly, with the goal of students returning to the comprehensive school setting.

      The R.E.A.L. Vision

Our vision is to foster a collaborative environment that empowers personal responsibility, positive decision making and equips our students to be independent productive citizens for the future.

      The R.E.A.L. Mission

Our mission is to create solutions-based opportunities for students with complex social and emotional needs in order to transition back to the traditional setting by providing consistent individual therapy, educating through community-based instruction and promoting social awareness.
