About Flint Hill Elementary School

Our MissionĀ

  • The mission of Flint Hill Elementary School is to promote student learning and high academic standards.

  • We will provide a respectful, learning environment that develops individual academic achievement, and supports social and emotional growth, citizenship and responsibility.

School Summary

  • Flint Hill is located just outside the town limits of Vienna. The school was officially opened in September 1955. The school name likely resulted from the geographical location known as Flint Hill and that the school was built on land area containing the quartz stone, flint. The cost of this original building was $232,000. Mrs. Elizabeth Burke was assigned as the first principal.

  • For our 50th Anniversary, we had a first day of school kick-off celebration with a ribbon cutting ceremony on September 6, 2005, which coincidentally marked the exact date school opened 50 years ago. Elizabeth Burke and Linda N. Clark were invited guests along with many former teachers. The school was presented with a commemorative declaration from Congress and from the House of Delegates. The 50th Anniversary theme was celebrated all year. In October, the GRACE Art committee collaborated with the school and every student created artwork used to construct a float for the annual Vienna Halloween parade. Flint Hill's float won first place in two categories: Best in Show and best Float without Music! The year culminated with a time capsule burial in the front of the school next to the flagpole. The time capsule contains school memorabilia and contributions from all grade levels. It is to be reopened on the school's 60th anniversary, in the year 2016.

  • The school mission is for teachers, parents and students to promote learning and high academic standards. All staff members provide a respectful learning environment that develops individual academic achievement and supports social and emotional growth.

  • As a PBS school, everyone highlights positive behaviors that coincide with our school wide expectations, the "Flint Hill Falcon Five". These expectations are tied directly to our school motto: "We Pursue Excellence Every Day in a Respectful Environment." Our goal is to use this program to recognize the positive expected behaviors regarding respect, safety, following directions, being prepared, and cooperating with others. These are the behaviors we want to see in children every day. We want every adult to recognize as many students for demonstrating these behaviors as possible.

  • This learning environment is also enriched with the partnership of a strong Parent Teacher Association (PTA). As a learning community, the school and community work together to make the school mission a reality.
